I bet you are thinking after reading the title of this post that this has nothing to do with pageantry. Well, you are far from wrong. In order to successfully compete in pageants, you must be physically fit. I stay physically fit by competing in long distance running events. I started running 5 years ago after some encouragement from my sorority sister, Anita. Since then I have completed several 5k events, one 10k event, and one marathon relay event. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate in the River Region Runners Labor Day Run which also served as the 2015 Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Alabama 8K State Championship. This event was held in Montgomery, Alabama, and the championship consisted of an 8K run and a 2 mile run. 157 runners competed in the 8K portion of the event. I went into this competition without any prior knowledge of the course. I must say this was one of the most challenging races I have ever competed in. The race began in front of the Union Train Shed and continued into the Capital Heights District. The course consisted of several hills which challenged me both physically and mentally. Although it was challenging,  I completed the race with no problems. My time was not my best time (1:04:27) , but I am still glad that I participated in the event. This event served as a preparation for future races, and consistent training will also keep me fit for future pageant competitions.
