The Royal Spotlight is an interview series where I highlight queens from a variety of pageant systems. This month I had the pleasure of interviewing Miss Black Alabama USA Talented Teen 2017 Kiesha Lee.

Tell me about yourself.

My name is Kiesha Lee, and I’m 16 years old. I live in Oxford, Alabama.

When did you start competing in pageants?

I competed in my first pageant at 10 years old. It was the Miss Pink and Precious Pageant.

Why do you compete in pageants?

I think it is a good way to express yourself and also to have fun.

Tell us about the Miss Black Alabama USA Pageant system.

Basically, it is a pageant that empowers young black women.

How do you prepare for competition?

Usually my family and I get a pageant coach or we just do it ourselves.

What have you learned about yourself from your pageant experience?

I learned that I can be confident in myself, and by doing pageants I have learned who I am as an individual.

What are your future plans for your pageant career?

I hope to continue to do pageants, and if I could I would like to compete in Miss Universe.

Tell us about your platform “Keep Calm and Carry on Love.”

My platform is basically where you take bags and you place toiletries in them such as toothbrushes and toothpaste and you give them out to foster children.

What is the inspiration behind this platform?

When I was in 8th grade one of my best friends was in foster care, and she told me she was leaving. My mom and I went to Wal-Mart and we purchased toiletries and a bag and we placed those toiletries in the bag and gave it to her.

What words of advice do you live by?

“Don’t make a permanent decision based on a temporary situation.”

Please provide your contact information so that others can reach out to you. Email? Social media handles?
