Royal Spotlight: Miss Earth United States 2017 Andreia Gibau

June 1, 2018

The Royal Spotlight is an interview series where I highlight queens from a variety of pageant systems. This month I have the pleasure of featuring Miss Earth United States 2017 Andreia Gibau.

Tell us about yourself.
I am 22 years old living in my favorite city in the world, New York City! I’m originally from Brockton, Massachusetts, and I left to attend St. John’s University where I just graduated from this past year with a degree in public relations and fashion. I speak 4 languages, with Portuguese being my first since my family is from Cape Verde. I’m passionate about life and doing things that make a difference, change lives, and make other people happy. Anyone who knows me can describe me as charismatic, confident, and very ambitious.
When did you start competing in pageants?
My first pageant was in November of 2014, I was definitely not the most polished contestant but I think what got me in top 15 was my personality. I was an actress and mostly did theater, and my director at the time suggested I do a pageant. It took him about 2 years to finally convince me to do. Looking back at it now, I’m so happy I took his suggestion.

Why do you compete in pageants?
The woman I am today, a part of it is all thanks to pageantry. It’s built in me so much character, confidence, and skills that I am so thankful to posses. But why do I truly compete? I compete for the platform. Pageants give women a voice that is so loud and clear, and they are able to bring awareness and educate people on something they are passionate about and think is important.

How many titles have you won?
I have previously won Miss Teen New York United States 2015, Miss Teen United States 2015, Miss Massachusetts Earth United States 2017, and Miss Earth United States 2017.

Tell us about the Miss Earth United States Pageant system.
Miss Earth is one of the top 3 biggest international pageants. The system has such a clear purpose and vision which is to be an advocate for the environment. Miss Earth continues to build its reputation as the most relevant and worthwhile beauty event in the world setting a legacy of beauty and responsibility.

How do you prepare for competition?
Preparing for a pageant becomes a lifestyle for me for a set number of months. I eat pretty healthy and work out regularly but when I’m preparing for a pageant it becomes a little more intense. I also always stay up to date with what is happening not just in the U.S but the entire world. Of course, I incorporate walking and media practices. It’s a journey for me when preparing and an opportunity for self growth and to push myself as much as I can to hopefully attain the title.

What are your future plans for your pageant career?
I’ve been so fortunate enough to hold a national title as a Teen and a Miss. At 22 years old and a recent college graduate, once my Miss Earth United States reign is over my focus is going to be on my career. As of right now I have no plans of doing another pageant, but that could change… we’ll just have to wait and see!

What words of advice do you live by?
I have 2 life mottos. The first is Stay humble, work hard, and be kind. The second is and if it won’t kill you, why not?
