Slaying the Photogenic Competition

April 19, 2016

On March 20, 2016, I had the opportunity to do a photo shoot in downtown Montgomery with Creating Memories. I wanted some updated photographs for my blog site, and I must say I was very pleased with the overall experience. My hair, makeup, and photographs were slayed to perfection.  The wind may have been disrespectful that day, but it worked to my advantage because each photograph showcased a different look. I am telling you this because it is important for contestants to have quality photos made before entering a pageant.  A Head shot is used in the pageant program book, and it is normally the first picture judges see.  Also, many pageants have an optional category known as the photogenic competition where contestants can win additional awards for their photogenic qualities. The last pageant I competed in I won the photogenic competition for my division, and the following tips can help you be successful in this segment of the pageant.

  • Wear a hairstyle that complements your facial features. I am a natural girl so I love wearing twist outs and flat twist outs in my pictures. It is gives me that bouncy curly hair that I absolutely love.
  • Hire a makeup artist. I know what you are thinking. Krystle, I cannot afford a professional makeup artist. I understand your concern, but try to save and make the investment if you can. A makeup artist will change your life and the quality of your photos.  If you are of a different race or ethnicity, make sure the makeup artist knows how to do makeup for different skin tones. Just because they may know their way around some M.A.C. and some brushes doesn’t mean they can do your makeup. I have had experiences where a makeup artist made me look too dark or “ashy,”and the pictures were a hot mess. If your pageant budget still won’t allow you to make the investment to hire a makeup artist, there are a lot of videos on YouTube that you can watch and self learn.
  • Hire a photographer that is both professional and knows his or her craft. No explanation needed.
  • Have fun at your session. I love taking pictures so my enjoyment and excitement is displayed in many of my pictures. Smile, look serious, and incorporate props. Do whatever makes you happy. It is your session.
