How to Utilize National Days to Maximize Your Reign

March 22, 2018

It is important that queens find activities or acts of service in order to maximize their reign. Remember, the crown is not about you; it is what you can do for others. One activity queens can use to bring awareness to their crown and their pageant system is utilizing national days. National days are fun and unusual holidays. Examples of these national days include National Frozen Yogurt Day, National Walking Day, or National Sock Day. Even those these days may be silly to acknowledge or celebrate, they are effective when it comes to showcasing the crown. So far this year, I have had the privilege of celebrating National Pancake Day and National Read Across America Day.

National Pancake Day took place on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. These events were held at various IHOP restaurants across the country. Patrons who visited IHOP during National Pancake Day received a free short stack of pancakes and were encouraged to make a donation to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals have raised more than $5 billion for 170 member hospitals that provide 32 million treatments to kids across the United States and Canada.

National Read Across America Day took place on Friday, March 2, 2018. National Read Across America is the signature program of the National Education Association. Now in its 20th year, this year round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources. I partnered with the United Way of Central Alabama in order to participate in this event.

Reading to the class

On Tuesday, February 27, 2018, the United Way of Central Alabama held a breakfast for the all of the Read Across America Day volunteers, and we also received training on how to properly read to the students. Even though the national day is held annually on March 2 (Dr. Seuss’s Birthday), our event was held the day before on March 1. I was able to read the book Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae to a Kindergarten Class at Randolph Park Elementary School in Anniston, Alabama. I used my love of reading to captivate my audience with my various expressions and voice changes. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing with the class.
